The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a safe and effective vaccine that protects against the HPV virus, which can cause cervical cancer. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the world. Most people who are infected with HPV clear the virus on their own, but some people develop persistent infections that can lead to cancer.

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine is recommended for all boys and girls ages 11-12, but it can be given as early as age 9. It can also be given to older children and young adults who have not been vaccinated.

When Will the HPV Vaccination Campaign Start?

The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination program to prevent cervical cancer in girls will commence on Sunday, October 15, following the experimental application. This vaccination program is being launched with the support of WHO, UNICEF, and The Vaccine Alliance – GAVI.

It is known that the program will start in Dhaka Division first, followed by implementation in three phases in all eight divisions of Bangladesh. The program will run for a total of 18 days in the first phase in Dhaka. During the first 10 days, vaccination will be administered in educational institutions and permanent centers. After eight days, immunization will continue at regular EPI immunization centers and through permanent centers.

Regarding vaccination, EPI’s program manager, SM Abdullah Al Murad, said, “We plan to ensure 95 percent of girls between the ages of 10 and 14 receive the Cervix vaccine.” We will conduct this program across the country in three phases. We will announce the vaccination program subject to availability in phases after completing the first phase.

Each vial contains two doses of the vaccine, which will be administered to two teenage girls. It is a single-dose vaccine administered intramuscularly. Currently, human papillomavirus vaccination is administered in 131 countries, and cervical vaccination is administered in 24 countries.
